Introduction

Rebar Coupler creates ConTech coupler to connect reinforcing TMT bars, whose bar ends are in contact and parallel to each other. Couplers can be created between reinforcing TMT bars. The selected reinforcement bar can be of different sizes and they can even have a different number of bars.

The only requirement is that one or more bar ends are in contact and parallel. The couplers can only be created between spliced bars. Couplers are created where the gap along the bar end is less than the length of the coupler.

Advantages Of Coupler

  1. A self-aligning taper- threaded design provides continuity and structural integrity.
  2. Quick and easy to install.
  3. Spliced bars behave as continuous lengths of reinforcing steel bars by providing full strength in tension and compression and stress reversal applications.
  4. Coupler systems are more reliable than lap systems because they don’t depend on the concrete for load transfer.
  5. Rebar coupler does not need skilled workers to install.
  6. Rebar couplers are cost effective by reducing labour costs and increase job site safety.

Rebar ConTech couplers are used in reinforced concrete structures to replace normal rebar lap joints. The ConTech couplers are also suitable for use in reinforced concrete columns and walls. Each rebar ConTech coupler consists of a piece of rebar equipped with a thread and ConTech coupler sleeve at the right end as viewed in the directions of installation. In construction joints, rebar ConTech couplers can be used to replace all pieces of rebar going through the formwork. Couplers are used for joining bars with full tension capacity. The ends of bars to be joined are provided with threads, and the bars are joined using a coupler sleeve that transfers the force on the rebar across the connection. By casting couplers into concrete, it is able to carry tensile loads and so increase overall strength.

Comparison Lapping ConTech Coupler
Wastage Wastage of bars during lapping No wastage of bars
Load transfer Totally Depend on concrete Bar to bar directly due to Contech Coupler
Rings 30% Extra Rings Used Transfer the force
Manpower 2 Labour Required 1 Labour Can Install
Dead Load High Due to overlap weight Zero Dead loads of overlap
Tension Between Bars Less Tension Full Tension Capacity
Iron Ore Natured Resourse Wasted In overlap Saved due to coupler
Quality Low High

Rebar couplers are used for the future expansion of the building. When we do the construction of the building we always left some part of the bars outside at the upper part of the building because if in the future we want to do the future expansion we can bind the bars and do the future expansion. It decreases the look of the building, wastage of bar, and increases chances of any kind of risk. By casting a rebar coupler at the end of the upper part of the building we cover the hole with cement. If in the future we want to expand we can remove the cement and insert the bar in the coupler and do the expansion. And couplers are not outside the building so it increases the look of the building.

Comparison Lapping ConTech Coupler
Look Decrease as outside the house Increase as not be visible
Risk Chances of Wound for children No as such chance
Installation Hard Easy
Cost More labour cost Less

The rebar coupler must be deeply embedded into adjacent structural members (40-60 times the diameter) which increases the friction locking the bar into place. Rebar can be bent and hooked at the ends to lock it around the concrete and other rebar sections, which makes use of the concrete’s high compressive strength. Concrete is strong under compression but has weak tensile strength. Rebar significantly increases the tensile strength of the structure. Rebar’s surface is often “deformed “with ribs, lugs, or indentations to promote a better bond with the concrete and reduce the risk of slippage. At the time of earthquake, the rebar coupler can’t be broken because the pressure transfer into the bars which are connected parallel with each other.

Problem:

Comparrison Lapping ConTech Coupler
Cost More Expensive Less Expensive
Strength Break the bond Transfer the tension or compression from one bar to another

Comparison:

Comparison Lapping ConTech Coupler
Load path Continuity Not good accurate
Structural integrity moderate great
Steel quantity Requires extra steel less
Rebar congestion Creates congestion, difficulty in concrete pouring and vibration Rebar couplers does not create congestion
Quality control Moderate Great
supervising moderate easy
cost high medium
wastages high Minimal
time Time consuming Fast work
installation Easy Very Easy
